If you want to become a master assassin in Oblivion Remastered, then you'll want to seek out the Dark Brotherhood.

There are several factions you can join across Cyrodiil in Oblivion Remastered. Some of the factions present themselves immediately to you and are extremely simple to join, as all you have to do is speak to the right person. However, there are other factions that require you to perform a specific action to join. The Dark Brotherhood is one of those factions, and there are a few different tasks you need to complete to get the chance to join the infamous group in Oblivion Remastered.

Below, we'll go over all of the ways you can join the Dark Brotherhood and what you need to do to be fully initiated into the faction.

Ways to join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion Remastered

First and foremost, you need to speak to a specific individual before you get the chance to join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion Remastered. After you speak to this individual, you'll be tasked with assassinating another NPC. It's only upon completion of this job that you're admitted into the brotherhood.

However, before you can think about that task and what it entails, you need to speak to the Dark Brotherhood representative who offers the task. This character's name is Lucien Lachance, and you can only speak to him after completing one very specific action.

To speak to Lucien Lachance and get the chance to join the Dark Brotherhood, you need to murder any innocent civilian in Oblivion Remastered. Once you've murdered this civilian, take a rest in a bed that's located in a safe spot with no other NPCs around. During your slumber, Lucien Lachance will wake you up and speak to you about joining the Dark Brotherhood.

In terms of the civilian you want to murder, it's best to avoid any quest characters, as you might need them later on in Oblivion Remastered. The optimal choice is a random NPC who isn't inside a large city, as that murder would place a bounty on you. Instead, you want an NPC who isn't near any guard and ideally is alone, so you don't have to murder anyone else that's nearby.

After you pick your prey, murder them in any way you see fit, and then find your bed. You'll be woken up automatically by the game to speak to Lucien Lachance, who fills you in on the task you need to complete to join the Dark Brotherhood.

Completing Lucien Lachance's quest in Oblivion Remastered

Once you're done speaking with Lucien Lachance, you'll learn that he wants you to assassinate a civilian by the name of Rufio. Lachance gives you the "Blade of Woe" sword to do the job. This begins the quest called "Knife in the Dark" in your journal. Rufio is located at the Inn of Ill Omen, which is an inn found northwest of Bravil and east of Skingrad along the Green Road.

At the Inn of Ill Omen, you can talk to the NPC behind the counter and ask him about Rufio. You'll find out that Rufio rented a room in the basement of the inn, which you can enter through a hatch near the front door of the inn.

In the basement, you want to wait until it's nighttime so Rufio will be asleep in his bed, which is found through the last door on your left. Enter the door and find Rufio in bed. It's up to you whether you want to speak to Rufio first or murder him while he sleeps.

If you awaken Rufio, there's a good chance he'll run at the first sign of danger, meaning you have to chase him down. There's no downside to just killing Rufio without talking to him, so that's the best route to take. Either way, you want to make sure you use the Blade of Woe when you kill Rufio, as that's important to Lucien Lachance.

When Rufio is dead, take a rest in one of the beds in the Inn of Ill Omen, or any other bed, and wait for Lucien Lachance to awaken you again. This time, he comes with glad tidings, as he offers you a position in the Dark Brotherhood.

Lucien Lachance tells you where to go to speak to the other members of the Dark Brotherhood, which is an abandoned house in Cheydinhal. You can enter the house and go through a large skull-faced door to meet the leader of that branch of the Dark Brotherhood and learn about how to take on jobs for the faction in Oblivion Remastered.
